Hill End History

In 1872, at the height of the gold mining boom, Hill End boasted a
population of approximately 7500. It had more than a mile of shop
frontages, 13 hotels, 6 churches, 4 schools, 2 newspapers, a brewery and a
brickworks. The foundation stone for the hospital was laid New Year's Day
1873.

|
| The township of Hill End was made an Historic Site by the
NSW Government in 1967 and the entire town brought under the management of
the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NP & WS). |

|
| Hill End is unique in NSW as a
gold rush town which has survived and is possibly the closest one could
come to re-living the gold rush era. |
